Ms. Deere, an inspiring mother and neighborhood mom to many.
As children growing up in an active, positive and supportive neighborhood, we knew certain houses were “safe homes.” This was because of the caring mother figures who lived there. Ms. Deere’s kindness and generosity extended far beyond her beloved sons. She welcomed other kids, like me, with church experiences, travel, food, shelter, advice and occasionally being the referee to calm a chaotic moment. This neighborhood mom was also a teacher of strength with a gentle touch and would cause us deep thought with few words. She remains admired and forever in our hearts.
Earlene Deere was one of my deepest friends. When I moved to Dallas in 1968, the first people I met were Dr. L. Deere and Earlene Deere. Our first residence was Prince Hall Apartments. After many years in Dallas, I moved back to Florida. While in Florida, Earlene and I talked by phone on a regular basis. I returned to Frisco, Texas in 2024 to live and I reached out to her. Since my return, we have been in touch by phone and a visit. I will really miss our phone calls the most. She was a true friend 🧡.
