Dion C. Drayton's Obituary
With grateful hearts for a life well lived and unwavering faith in God's promises, we celebrate the life and legacy of Dion C. Drayton. On June 30, 2026, Dion was called home to be with the Lord, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew and loved him.
Born on May 15, 1970, in Madison, Wisconsin, Dion was the beloved son of Dwight "Duke" Drayton and Sharon Drayton. He was raised in Rockford, Illinois, alongside his brother, Dante' Drayton, in a home deeply rooted in faith, love, and family.
At an early age, Dion accepted Christ at Providence Baptist Church in Rockford, where he faithfully served in many areas of ministry. There he developed a lifelong love for worship, fellowship, and God's people, a faith that remained the cornerstone of his life.
Dion was blessed to be raised by an extraordinary village of grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family. On both the Drayton and Cain sides, cousins were never simply cousins; they were brothers and sisters. Those lifelong relationships helped shape the loyal, compassionate, family-centered man he became.
Dion was a proud graduate of Rockford East High School where he excelled both academically and athletically and proudly represented the East E-Rabs basketball program for four years. He continued his education and basketball career at Rock Valley College and later attended Longview College in Kansas City. There he met Todd Wiggins, beginning a lifelong friendship that became more like brotherhood. When Todd relocated to Dallas in 1994, Dion followed, making North Texas his home for the next thirty-two years.
After moving to Dallas, Dion built a life centered on faith, family, and service. Affectionately known as "D," "Mr. Social," and "The Mayor," he never met a stranger. Whether mentoring coworkers or helping friends settle into Texas, Dion had a gift for making people feel welcome.
Throughout his professional career, Dion served with the Internal Revenue Service, Fidelity Investments, Credit Solutions, AT&T, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Baylor Scott & White Health, where he most recently served as a Blood and Marrow Transplant Donor Search Coordinator. During his eight years with Baylor Scott & White Health, he developed lasting bonds with teammates who became like family. Throughout his career, Dion was respected for his integrity, compassion, and servant leadership.
Dion believed learning was a lifelong journey. He never stopped striving to learn and grow. Completing his college degree was deeply important to him because he wanted to set an example for his sons, showing them that perseverance, discipline, faith, and hard work can carry them through any season. His determination was honored when he was posthumously awarded a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration.
In May 2005, Dion met Aaran Bianca Lane through a mutual friend. Their relationship began with long conversations, endless laughter, and an easy friendship that steadily grew into love. They often smiled when telling the story of how they met because each remembered that first meeting a little differently, but they both believed their paths had been brought together for a reason.
On October 3, 2010, Dion and Aaran were married. In 2011, they were blessed with the birth of their son, Drew Aaron Drayton. In 2016, they made Mansfield, Texas their home, where they built a life centered on faith, family, and one another. Together, they created a home where love flourished.
While Dion accomplished much throughout his life, nothing brought him greater joy than being a husband and father.
He was the proud father of Devin McKenzie Cousin and Drew Aaron Drayton. He treasured the years and summers he shared with Devin and delighted in watching him grow into adulthood. The bond they maintained over the years remained deeply important to him.
With Drew, Dion experienced some of the greatest joys of fatherhood as well. He and Drew shared countless conversations about life and sports, and Dion passed on his lifelong love of the Chicago Bears. These moments became treasured memories for father and son. He was Drew's coach, mentor, biggest supporter, and best friend.
To know Dion was to experience love. His heart was as big as his smile, and he believed the greatest measure of a life was how you treated people. He lived that belief every day.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Aaran Bianca Drayton; his beloved sons, Devin McKenzie Cousin and Drew Aaron Drayton; his loving parents, Dwight "Duke" Drayton and Sharon Drayton; his brother, Dante' (Jessica) Drayton; his nephew, Dionte' Drayton; his grandmother, Roberta M. Drayton; his aunts, Deborah (Ted) Nelson, LaDeta Gandy, Arnez Glover, and Kim Alexander; his uncles, Leon (Ruby) Drayton, Robert (Michelle) Drayton, Gerald (Joyce) Cain, and Rev. Robert A. (Ruby) Cain; his beloved Lane family, who embraced him as one of their own from the very beginning; his special lifelong friends, Todd Wiggins, Anthony Montgomery and Tynagia Polk; his special second parents, Leon and Ruby Drayton; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, coworkers, neighbors, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lonnie Drayton, George O. Cain, and Ozella Cain; his uncles, George Cain and Lonnie E. Drayton; his aunts, Vicki Ellis and Madeleine Sherod; and his beloved cousin, Tranier Drayton.
Dion's legacy will not be measured simply by the years he lived, but by the faith he shared, the family he cherished, the lives he touched, and the love he gave so freely.
Though we grieve his absence, we rejoice in knowing that heaven has welcomed home a faithful servant.
Well done, good and faithful servant.
